NCC Commences Pre-Enforcement Action on Starlink over Price Hike

In a move to safeguard consumer interests and ensure regulatory compliance, the NCC has commence pre-enforcement proceeding against Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service provider, over an unauthorized increase in subscription rates.

According to a statement released by the Commission, signed by director of public affairs Reuben Muoka, said the pre-enforcement action commenced on October 3, 2024 when Starlink did not receive the approval of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) before it reviewed its subscription packages.

“The decision by Starlink to unilaterally review its subscription packages upwards did not receive the approval of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The action of the company is in contravention of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA), 2003, and Starlink’s Licence Conditions regarding tariffs,” the statement reads.

The NCC’s action seeks to rein in Starlink’s pricing practices and ensure adherence to established guidelines, potentially paving the way for enforcement measures.
