In a resounding testament to visionary leadership and institutional renewal, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, has been honored with the prestigious “Transformative Reforms and Leadership Excellence” award by the Finance and Business Online Publishers (.FiBOP) at the 2026 Annual Conference of the Association held last Saturday in Lagos.

The accolade celebrates his exceptional stewardship, which has catalyzed a profound paradigm shift in Nigeria’s trade and border management landscape.

The recognition specifically highlights Dr. Adeniyi’s outstanding performance in advancing trade facilitation, deepening institutional transparency, driving technological innovation, and executing a sweeping modernization agenda within the NCS. Since assuming leadership, his strategic initiatives have fundamentally reshaped the Service from a traditional revenue collector into a modern, globally compliant trade facilitator.

At the core of his reformative tenure is a relentless pursuit of revenue optimization paired with unprecedented trade facilitation. By dismantling bureaucratic bottlenecks, streamlining cargo clearance procedures, and championing the full implementation of the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) scheme and the Time Release Study (TRS), Dr. Adeniyi has significantly reduced port congestion. These measures have drastically lowered the cost of doing business at Nigerian ports while simultaneously driving impressive milestones in government revenue generation.

Beyond commercial efficiency, the Comptroller-General has maintained an unyielding focus on fortifying national security at the borders. Under his watch, the NCS has deployed cutting-edge non-intrusive inspection technologies, enhanced inter-agency intelligence sharing, and intensified anti-smuggling operations. These rigorous security frameworks have successfully curbed illicit trafficking, protected local industries from unfair competition, and safeguarded critical economic corridors.

Institutional modernization stands out as another crowning achievement of Dr. Adeniyi’s administration. Recognizing that 21st-century customs administration demands digital dexterity, he has spearheaded the digitization of core customs processes, including the phased rollout of the advanced Unified Customs Management System. This technological leap has minimized human intervention, eliminated leakages, and fostered an environment of absolute accountability and transparency.

Receiving the award on behalf of CGC, Bashir Adeniyi, Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Lagos Free Trade Zone Command AbdulGaniy Oloro Usman praised FiBOP for recognizing the giant strides of the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi and assured that the service remains committed to collaborating more with the media and other stakeholders across the maritime, manufacturing, and international trade sectors to speed up that attainment of the $1 trillion Economy target

As the Nigeria Customs Service continues to chart a progressive course under his guidance, this honour serves as both a celebration of past milestones and a clarion call for sustained excellence. Dr. Adeniyi’s leadership proves that purposeful reform, driven by integrity and innovation, is vital to unlocking Nigeria’s vast economic potential on the global stage.
