NLC Strike: Lagos Civil Servants Turned Back From Office

As the organised labour made good their threat to embark on strike action on June 3rd to press home their demand for a new minimum wage and reduction of electricity tariff, the economy of the nation was paralysed on Monday as other unions also joined them in their industrial action.

Workers of the Lagos State government being taken to their offices in Alausa in the state government staff bus were turned back by labour leaders and told to go back home, as roads leading to the state secretariat, Alausa and other major roads were barricaded by the Union leaders.

Also, the main gate to the State secretariat was shut, while all the affected staff buses were not allowed entrance into the state secretariat premises, as they were turned back, even some staff who got to their offices earlier and were already settled down for the day’s job were told to leave their offices.

While enforcing the nationwide strike, members of labour union shut down the office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Lagos, after chasing its staff out of the Agidingbi, Ikeja, office.

The major roads in the state recorded low traffic on Monday, compared to other Mondays which was very busy, and heavy traffic would be recorded.

In some places visited, some traders also refused to open their shops, while only few traders were seen trading in some markets, this could be as a result of fear of being attacked by hoodlums, who might capitalised on the industrial action to loot the whares of the traders.
